Young Boy Dies in Dry Drowning Accident in Texas

A 4-year-old boy died in a dry drowning accident after returning from a family vacation in Texas.

The child was playing in the knee-deep water at the Texas City Dike when a wave knocked him under water. He told his family he was okay at the time.

The next night, he began to vomit and have diarrhea, which continued through the week.

Later that week, his father watched him suddenly wake up, take a deep breath, and roll his eyes back.

The boy’s father rushed him to the hospital when he stopped breathing.

Doctors tried for over an hour to resuscitate him.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.

Dry drowning, most common in children, occurs after the victim finishes swimming. The victim takes in water through the nose or mouth which causes spasms in the air passage. Then breathing is restricted and can lead to fatality.

Symptoms first appear 24 hours after the incident. These include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fever.
